The scheme will open to all nationals coming to the UK who do not currently need a visa. This means citizens from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and other non-European visa-exempt nations will need to apply for an ETA before they can enter the UK. This gradual rollout will eventually apply to all visa-exempt visitors, including those from European countries.

ETA operates similarly to the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or the European Union’s upcoming ETIAS system.

Why is ETA changing?

ETA is part of a wider effort by the UK government to modernize its immigration controls while making border security stronger. Initially launched in early 2023 for select countries, including some Middle Eastern nations, the scheme is changing to cover a broader pool of international travelers.
