The UK ETA expansion: What’s new?
In November 2024, the UK is broadening its ETA scheme to include travelers from a wider range of countries that were previously exempt from visa requirements. Requirement are already in place for nationals of Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. The scheme will open to all nationals coming to the UK who do not currently need a visa. This means citizens from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and other non-European visa-exempt nations will need to apply for an ETA before they can enter the UK. This gradual rollout will eventually apply to all visa-exempt visitors, including those from European countries.
ETA operates similarly to the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or the European Union’s upcoming ETIAS system.
Why is ETA changing?
ETA is part of a wider effort by the UK government to modernize its immigration controls while making border security stronger. Initially launched in early 2023 for select countries, including some Middle Eastern nations, the scheme is changing to cover a broader pool of international travelers. This shift is designed to maintain the UK’s open-door policy for legitimate visitors while ensuring the integrity of its immigration processes.
ETA’s impact on business travelers and how it works
The ETA scheme adds an additional step in the travel process, but it’s designed to be quick and easy for business and leisure travelers. Travelers accustomed to flying into the UK on short notice will need to apply for the ETA online by providing personal details, passport information, and travel plans. Once approved, the ETA will link electronically to passports. It’s typically valid for multiple visits over a specified period.
The good news: The ETA system is expected to reduce wait times at border control, as immigration checks will be completed before arrival. The processing time is expected to be short, with most travelers receiving approval within 48 to 72 hours. However, it’s crucial for business travelers to apply in advance, as last-minute trips could be complicated if the ETA isn’t secured in time.
ETA checklist for business travelers
If you’re planning a business trip to the UK, it’s important to factor the ETA into your travel preparations. Here’s what you need to do:
- Apply online well in advance of your trip. The process is simple and quick, but giving yourself ample time will ensure that your approval arrives before your departure.
- Make the ETA part of your standard business travel checklist, alongside tasks like booking flights and accommodations.
- Be aware of the validity period for your ETA. It lasts for two years and will cover multiple visits over time, reducing the need for repeated applications. If you get a new passport, you will need to get a new ETA.
- An ETA does not guarantee entry to the U.K. And you’ll still need to see a Border Force officer to enter.
The same rules apply for leisure trips.
A new convenience for U.S. travelers: Online passport renewal
U.S. travelers, take note, the U.S. State Department has introduced a major convenience: online passport renewal. Here’s everything you need to know about these developments.
Previously, renewing a U.S. passport required a trip to the post office or passport office, followed by a wait for mail-in forms. Now, eligible U.S. citizens can complete the entire renewal process online, from submitting the necessary forms and paying fees to uploading a passport photo. This is a game-changer for busy professionals who need to keep their travel documents up to date without the hassle of paperwork or in-person appointments.
