The world’s most sustainable countries for remote workers

Sustainable Tourism is an attainable goal for business travellers in the know. Underscored by climate change, sustainability goals in travel are geared toward reducing carbon footprints and the corresponding negative impact on the environment.

As with large, unwieldy organisations, change is slow to happen and bound by red tape, so countries are slower to adapt to new policies. At a more micro level, cities are committing to sustainability models that enhance quality of life for citizens and demonstrating the benefits of more sustainable models across the globe.

If you’re a remote worker, why not try one of the cities that are leading the way?

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

Copenhagen is one of the major financial centres of Northern Europe and the cultural, economic and governmental centre of Denmark. It is also earmarked to be the first carbon neutral city in the world, a lofty goal set by the city itself. This is made possible by efficient carbon neutral heating and cooling systems and green electricity from renewable sources.

Add to that the health benefits of active lifestyles facilitated by the “bicycle superhighway” that connects outer districts and suburbs to the city centre and it’s easy to see why it features on our list of sustainable business tourism destinations.

MORE THAN THAT

Copenhagen is home to two of the best restaurants in the world, Danish chef René Redzepi’s, Noma, and Rasmus Kofoed’s restaurant Geranium.

It is also renowned for being the safest city in the world.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

The big apple has taken a bite out of its carbon footprint by implementing single-stream recycling, adding more bike lanes, and more efficient amenities inside buildings like water heaters and green roofs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

According to Mayor Bill de Blasio, “fossil fuels burned for heat and hot water in New York’s buildings account for 42% of the city’s overall greenhouse gas emissions and the city is aiming to adapt buildings to be more green. The efficiency initiative will create cleaner air and reduce carbon pollution, helping the city reach its goal of reducing GHG emission by at least 80% by 2050 (80×50 plan)”.

MORE THAN THAT

Travellers are more interested than ever in sustainable travel options — and are willing to pay a premium for it. According to Euromonitor’s Sustainable Travel Index from August 2023, nearly 80% of travellers are willing to pay at least 10% more for sustainable features.

New York is home to two 1 Hotels, a sustainable luxury brand with locations in metropols and beachside hollows.

Nestled in the northeast corner of 58th Street and Sixth Avenue, a three-story living wall of English ivy offers travellers a slice of urban zen and a reminder that nature can thrive, even in the frenzied maze of Midtown Manhattan. A perfect example of high luxury with low impact.

LONDON, ENGLAND

As the bustling capital of the United Kingdom, London stands at the forefront of finance, culture, and innovation. Amidst its historical landmarks and vibrant city life, London is taking bold strides towards improving its environmental footprint. Spearheaded by Mayor Sadiq Khan, the city is set to implement the “Congestion Charge Zone”, a pioneering move aimed at reducing dangerous air pollution within the heart of the city. This initiative will see older vehicles being charged a fee to access central London, encouraging the shift towards cleaner transportation options. In contrast, electric vehicles will enjoy the privilege of traversing the zone without charge, aligning with the city’s broader goals of sustainability and cleaner air.

Furthering its commitment to environmental health, The Guardian reports that Mayor Khan will also introduce stringent regulations on wood burning stoves. By 2025, the city plans to restrict the use of older, more polluting stoves and mandate that all new installations meet stringent clean air standards. This policy not only targets a reduction in air pollution but also champions the health and wellbeing of London’s residents.

MORE THAN THAT

London’s status as one of the world’s leading financial centres is complemented by its commitment to becoming a greener city, making it an exemplary destination for sustainable business tourism.
