The economic impact of women in travel

According to data published in 2019 by the World Travel & Tourism Council, women represent 54 percent of the travel and tourism industry's 334 million workers, which is above the average representation of women contributing to many countries' overall economies.

Travel seems to be the domain of the ladies who account for the majority of the workforce and who bring something special to the table. It’s the perfect example of synergy arithmetic, the 1 + 1 = 3 phenomenon. The intangible contribution of women in travel is as much an asset to travel management companies as the distant and exotic locations they endorse to boost tourism.

The most recent example of the power of women in business and the impact that they have on travel is as surprising as it is impressive. According to the Common Sense Institute, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has had a massive impact on the US economy and could generate $ 4.6 billion in total consumer spending, larger than the GDP of 35 countries.

The tour consists of 131 concerts across 17 states and 5 continents and has attracted fans to cities across the US. According to the World Music Awards, it has helped boost hotel revenues in Philadelphia: “Despite the slowing recovery in tourism in the region overall, one contact highlighted that May was the strongest month for hotel revenue in Philadelphia since the onset of the pandemic, in large part due to an influx of guests for the Taylor Swift concerts in the city,” the Fed announced in its Beige Book. Hotel prices more than tripled in Pittsburgh, Minneapolis and Kansas City. Hotel occupancy rates in Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, were at full capacity during the tour, and online hotel reservation platforms crashed because of the surge in web traffic.

Over just one weekend, the Eras Tour drew crowds of 150 000 to attend two concerts with an estimated $ 200 000 million in direct consumer spending. Ticket sales for the two concerts generated an estimated $ 38 million alone. That is the power of one woman and the incredible impact it has had on a resurgence in travel and tourism.

At Rennies BCD Travel, we recognize the power of women in the travel industry, not just as a workforce majority but as creators and influencers of immense opportunities. The example of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour demonstrates the incredible economic strength one woman can have. But this isn’t isolated to the entertainment industry; women throughout the travel and tourism sectors are driving growth, innovation, and global connection.

Beyond being a majority of the workforce, women hold significant leadership roles within the industry. From managing travel agencies to leading tour groups and pioneering innovative travel experiences, women are pushing boundaries and breaking barriers.

The impact of women in travel is multifaceted, far-reaching, and vital to the industry’s growth and resilience. From celebrities like Taylor Swift to the travel professionals working behind the scenes at Rennies BCD Travel, women are shaping the travel experience in ways that resonate globally.
