In the news: “The Greta effect” on business travel

The “Greta effect” to protect the environment hasn’t yet affected business travel in Germany. That’s according to BCD Travel’s Holger Schmeding. In an interview with German news magazine “Der Spiegel,” Schmeding said business travelers still choose air travel more often than more environmentally friendly train trips.

Sixteen-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg’s protests against climate change have sparked support among thousands of followers throughout Europe. But business travelers in the region have been slow to join the “Greta effect” movement, which advocates for decreased dependency on fuels used to power trains and planes, among other things.

Holger Schmeding, managing director for BCD Travel Germany, told news magazine Der Spiegel that business travelers still choose air travel more often than environmentally friendly trains, despite the growing awareness.

Plane fuel releases carbon dioxide directly into the earth’s upper atmosphere, causing long-term harmful effects to our air and climate. A train potentially uses 50% less fuel than an airplane. However, air travel is still more popular—even among travelers whose companies encourage them to use the train, Schmeding said.
