What you need to know: Omicron and travel restrictions

The emergence of the COVID-19 omicron variant has prompted countries around the world to implement or reimpose travel restrictions. A new report from BCD Travel Research & Innovation provides a snapshot of some of the recent changes in Europe and North America.

In some places, tighter rules reverse the freedoms given to fully vaccinated travelers. Many countries have targeted their response specifically against travel to/from southern Africa, others, like France, the United Kingdom and the United States have applied changes to a much broader group of travelers, and in some cases, to all travelers.

The tightening of travel restrictions may prove to be temporary, should Omicron prove to be less serious than initially feared. If the concerns about Omicron are realized, the return of some restrictions could become more enduring and widespread.
