Trend alert: Serviced and extended-stay accommodations

It’s time for travel programs to reconsider home-style properties.

Serviced apartments and extended-stay properties with kitchen facilities are gaining renewed interest from corporate travel programs, according to the 2017 Industry Forecast from business travel consultancy Advito.

Some reasons for the boost in popularity:

  • These accommodations provide a compromise between hotels and Airbnb-style private offerings.
  • Business travelers who use sharing-economy accommodations for leisure travel are growing fonder of the home-like amenities these properties offer.
  • Travelers with strict dietary needs can be well served in properties with full kitchens.
  • Hotel room scarcity in some markets has encouraged travel programs to consider these alternatives.

Extended-stay brands like Marriott’s Residence Inn have upgraded their products dramatically over the past three years, Advito reports. The consultancy advises it may be time for travel managers to give this accommodation niche another look.
