REAL ID rollout expected in 2016

Policy change applies to some U.S. travelers.

Starting sometime next year, air travelers carrying a driver’s license from some U.S. states and territories will need to carry a second, U.S. government-approved form of ID because their driver’s licenses won’t meet federal REAL ID standards for security.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security hasn’t yet announced exact rollout dates. But many states already have been granted REAL ID extensions until June or October 2016, and DHS says it will provide notice at least 120 days before making a change that would invalidate existing driver’s licenses as acceptable identification for boarding flights.

Check out this state-by-state map showing compliance, as well as this list of acceptable alternative IDs.
