Powdery substances may be subject to more search on U.S.-bound flights

Tighter security measures go into effect June 30.

Travelers carrying powdery substances on international flights bound for the U.S. may be subject to additional security screening starting June 30. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises travelers to place non-essential powders larger than 12 ounces or 350 milliliters – about the size of a soda can – inside checked baggage. Substances like baby formula and medically necessary powders (including protein shakes) in reasonable quantities and cremation ashes are allowed inside the cabin but must be screened and identified. Any unresolved substances may be discarded by authorities.

Some of the powdery substances that may require additional screening include:

  • Protein shakes
  • Baby powder (talcum)
  • Dry shampoo
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Spices
  • Ground coffee or tea
  • Powdered milk
  • Powdered cosmetics
