New U.S. security for mobile devices

Fliers must turn on electronics—or leave them behind.

A new security measure from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security bans non-working mobile devices from aircraft flying to the United States. The measure affects flights to and from Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The United Kingdom also is enforcing the measure, and other governments could follow.

Under the new requirement, travelers may be asked to boot up their phones, tablets, ebook readers, laptops or other electronic devices to demonstrate that they function properly. Devices that do not function will be banned from aircraft, and the traveler may also undergo additional screening.

BCD Travel has put together an informative Q&A to answer travelers’ and travel managers’ questions about the new directive.
