Ask a concierge: Belgrade

Business travel tips for Belgrade.

At the Hyatt Regency Belgrade, concierge Bojan Obradović guides guests to the best things to do and the best places to dine in this historic city. Here he offers expert advice for business travelers.

What should business travelers pack for a visit your city?

Depending on your personality and interests, you might pack everything from flip-flops and bathing suits to high heels and formal wear. Summers are hot, so you’ll need sunscreen. Spring and autumn are pleasant, but a light jacket is a must at night or in case it rains. Winters are very cold, so be sure to dress in layers and bring a very thick coat.

What are your top restaurant recommendations for a business lunch or dinner?

Our business guests like Kalemegdanska Terasa (Mali Kalemegdan bb, Ph: 011 328 3011), located on the Belgrade fortress. Madera (43 Bulevar kralja Aleksandra St., Ph: 011 323 1332), near breathtakingly beautiful Tasmajdan Park, is as great place for a business dinner. It has a beautiful terrace and upscale international cuisine. For a more casual dinner, try a restaurant next to the Sava or Danube rivers. I recommend Ambar (Karadjordjeva 2-4, Ph: 011  328 6637), which offers traditional food in lovely surroundings.

What’s something that surprises guests about your hotel?

Our lobby brings the outdoors in with an all-weather garden and a stream filled with goldfish.

If business travelers only have a few hours for leisure, what must they see?

Belgrade is one of the brightest cultural centers in the region, so there’s plenty to see. But if your time is limited, I would recommend Kalemegdan Fortress, the city’s greatest historic treasure. Republic Square is a central meeting place for locals, and it’s near the National Museum and the National Theater, both worth seeing. Visit St. Sava Temple, one of the largest Christian orthodox temples in the Balkans. Then get lunch in Skadarlia, Belgrade’s bohemian quarter, or dine by the rivers.

What’s the best option for outdoor exercise in Belgrade?

Run next to the rivers or exercise in one of our outdoor gyms in a park. There are lots of public outdoor (and indoor) swimming pools available, too. Serbians are big tennis fans, so if you’re up for a match, you’ll find tennis courts available all over the city.

Business know-how

Concierge Bojan Obradović’s top tips for getting business right in Belgrade:

Tip 1: Don’t keep colleagues or clients waiting for business meetings. Serbs will be on time and will expect the same from you. For leisure appointments, we’re a bit more relaxed about promptness.

Tip 2: One person usually pays the tab for everyone’s dinner, although it’s also acceptable to split a tab evenly among all the diners.

Tip 3: Be prepared for boisterous locals. Serbians are passionate and have a reputation for turning up the volume, whether it’s music or conversation.
