Older MacBooks restricted on airlines

Here’s a useful tip for MacBook-carrying business travelers: Check your laptop before your next business trip. Multiple airlines have banned or restricted Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pros following Apple’s voluntary recall of the device’s battery. The U.S. Federal Aviation Agency and European Union Aviation Safety Agency issued bans and warning following the recall.

Multiple airlines have imposed flight restrictions on MacBook Pros (and Apple laptops in general) after a voluntary recall by Apple of 15-inch MacBook Pros. The recall due to faulty batteries was followed by bans and warnings from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.

Apple has provided a support page to identify affected laptops.

Airline bans and restrictions

  • Air India, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways have banned affected MacBook Pros from their flights.
  • Virgin Australia has banned all Apple laptops from checked luggage. Passengers must carry on the laptops and keep them off at all times.
  • Etihad and Qantas Airways have banned MacBook Pros from checked luggage. MacBook Pros in carry-on luggage must remain off.

Checklist for travelers

  • Find out if your laptop is part of Apple’s voluntary recall.
  • Contact your airline before bringing an Apple laptop on a flight because restrictions may vary.
