U.S. and U.K. officials have banned certain electronic devices from being carried into the cabins of some flights from the Middle East. That means business travelers need to plan ahead to secure data in laptops and other devices that now must be left in checked luggage, BCD Travel’s Yannis Karmis recently told the Wall Street Journal.
Karmis, BCD’s senior vice president for product strategy and development, advised travelers to limit the amount of important information stored on affected devices—generally, anything larger than a cellphone. He recommended using encryption to safeguard data. Karmis also suggested travelers carry critical files on a pocket-size USB flash drive, which can be brought into the cabin.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.K. Department of Transport enacted the device bans on March 21.
