At the Raffles Singapore, concierge Dian Lestari Roslan gives expert guidance on how to find the best of what this spectacular Asian city has to offer. Here are her tips for business travelers.

What should business travelers have on hand when visiting your city?

“Business travelers in Singapore need to keep in mind two important things: weather and identification. Singapore’s weather is humid and warm, and it can be slightly uncomfortable for those who aren’t used to wearing suits all day in such an environment. Carry a handkerchief or small face towel, and use face mist to freshen up throughout the day. It’s also good to carry a small umbrella, especially during the rainy season from November to January. When out in the city, guests also should bring the hotel’s business card for easy reference. It’s also a good idea to bring along an identification card such as a driver’s license.”

What are your top restaurant recommendations for a business lunch or dinner?

Raffles Grill at our hotel (1 Beach Road; Ph: +65 6412 1816) is an ideal dining spot in the heart of Singapore’s business and civic district. The ambience and cuisine—classic and contemporary French offerings—are perfect for business. Nestled among the shop houses of Tanjong Pagar, Blue Ginger (97 Tanjong Road; Ph: +65 6222 3928) evokes both Singapore’s colonial heritage and its delicious Peranakan cuisine. A more casual option is the nearby Longtail Asian Brasserie & Bar on Marina Bay (70 Collyer Quay, #01-03 Customs House; Ph: +65 6532 1319). Its eclectic menu draws on flavors from Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.”

What’s something that surprises guests about your hotel?

“Guests frequently ask whether the hotel was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore. Raffles Singapore actually was founded by the four Sarkies brothers. The Sarkies also helped build one of the first (and oldest) churches in Singapore, the Armenian Church. It’s an important historical landmark and offers a garden oasis in the middle of the city.”

If business travelers only have a few hours for leisure, what must they see?

“For the nature-loving traveler, a must-see is definitely the Gardens by the Bay, an attraction with diverse plant life from all around the world. For the history buff, there’s the National Museum of Singapore with interesting and educational exhibits, displays and lectures. Districts such as Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam (historically the Malay-Muslim quarter) showcase the cultures and cuisines that have shaped Singapore.”

What’s the best option for outdoor exercise?

“Take a run or brisk walk alongside the Singapore River, near the Central Business District. The trek is scenic, taking you past Parliament House, Marina Bay and Merlion Park.”
