More than 40 million people around the world are trapped in modern-day slavery, and a quarter of them are children. A year ago, BCD Travel joined the international effort to protect children from enslavement and exploitation by partnering with End Child Prostitution and Trafficking (ECPAT).

Over the past 12 months, BCD’s position as a leader in the global business travel industry has given the travel management company a unique opportunity to make a difference. Traffickers often use air travel to transport victims and use hotels as places to abuse them. BCD used its reach to raise awareness of the issue among companies, suppliers and business travelers—encouraging them to watch for the signs of exploitation and report abuse. BCD supported ECPAT’s mission by:
- Educating its own employees about ECPAT and how to spot and report signs of child exploitation
- Encouraging clients to sign on to ECPAT and engage their frequent travelers in the effort to recognize and report these crimes
- Collaborating with business travel suppliers and other TMCs on opportunities to raise awareness and put an end to the trafficking of children
In 2019, BCD plans a formal awareness campaign. The TMC also is exploring how it can use traveler-facing tools to spread the word.

BCD’s partnership with ECPAT aligns with its participation in The Code, a multi-member initiative of the travel industry. The Code encourages members to provide educational tools and support initiatives to end the sexual exploitation of children.
